Hotspots in the La Dordogne region
Brantôme – only 20 minutes’ drive away is the picturesque town of Brantôme, known as ‘the Venice of the Dordogne’. Set on the banks of the Dronne, it is delightful to visit with its small shops, restaurants and cafes, and a Michelin-starred restaurant. It has a colourful market every Friday. Boat trips are available and kayak and canoe facilities abound on the banks of the river. There are caves dating from pre-historic times and beautiful medieval Abbey buildings.
Aubeterre – famous for its Monolithic church and caves, again with a village square full of arty and quirky little shops and cafes, perfect for a Sunday afternoon visit. A typical French square with alfresco dining in the centre.
Angouleme – fortified walled city, with winding cobbled streets, markets and hosts the world cartoon festival. In September the streets are closed for the ‘Circuit des Remparts’ (Vintage Car Racing and Rally).
Périgueux – historic market town full of winding streets with a magnificent cathedral, cafés and tea shops and charming independent boutiques.
Saint-Emillion – a must for wine connoisseurs. This fabulous roman town, steeped in history and dating back some 2000 years, is full of little wine shops and perfect for wine tasting and dining with its many restaurants. Well worth a visit.
Bordeaux – just over two hours away, set on the Dordogne and Gironde rivers; it has fabulous architecture and a café/restaurant culture.
Bergerac – with its light and fruity wines and pretty streets and market square.

Chateau de Bourdeilles

The chateau consists of two parts, the original 13th century fortress and 16th century renaissance palace. The chateaux has a wonderful view over the surrounding area from the main tower. There is also a beautiful courtyard garden full of flowers and lined by trees.
Chateau de Puyguilhem, Chateau de Villebois and Chateau de Onbazillac are also worth checking out.
